Enjoying small town festivities. Silverton has always had one of the best July 4th celebrations, hence the reason the population swells from about 600 to over 25,000 for the holiday. This year, other than a smaller parade, things seem to be going on as normal. However, I am told that the fire department, that puts on one of the largest and most spectacular fireworks shows in the southwest has elected to not participate next year. Politics has come to the small town. Tonight's show will be bittersweet. Hope the town figures it all out before next year.
People start lining up early
We always view from Blair Street:
Local "old timer vets" always lead the parade, but
the most inspiring part is when the F16s buzz the parade route,
break away and soar back into the sky:
There were lots of decorated Jeeps, ATVs, etc.
Here are just a few entrants:
You know when these guys fire their rifles (poor dogs & babies):
The Silverton Brass Band, made up of all ages does a phenomenal job.
They also play on the street corner every Sunday evening:
This lady has not forgotten how to twirl a flag, toss & catch:
Always get a kick out of watching this group crawl up each other's tires:
(I wouldn't try this on the interstate if I were you)
The infamous "Shady Ladies" of Blair Street:
Beads, candy, flags!
Giveeee me; giveee me:
The insane runners in town acclimating for next weekend's impossible run;
More about this later.
And of course, every year, the parade ends with a good dousing for everybody that doesn't take cover.
This year they even had one of the trucks in the middle of the parade to try to catch observers off guard.
