Dale & Betty, James & Wendy, Jim & I all took an afternoon drive thru Eureka Gulch to the old Sunnyside Mine. Trail elevation is about 12,100 feet. The mine was established in 1873 and was finally closed in 1991. It was shut down from 1931 to 1937 only to be temporally shut down a couple of years later due to a miners' strike. At one time it was one of the best producing mines in the area.

The trail winds thru the area where Lake Emma used to be before collapsing on
June 4, 1978. Fortunately it was a Sunday and no miners were working.
Thousands of gallons of water & millions of tons of mud & rock drained into the American Tunnel & Terry Tunnel, and exited at Gladstone about two miles away and 1500 feet lower.
The cleanup took more than two years.
